Welcome to Mental Socket!

About Me

January 16, 2004 - Panama City, Florida - The Internet slowed down, traffic increased ten fold and all eyes were on www.mentalsocket.com. The unveiling of the highly anticipated site had finally arrived. Steven Young, creator of the amazing site was bombarded with interview requests and email about the new site. The 32 year old computer consultant took a break from his daily routine of maintaining small business computer networks to discuss the site and how it came to be.

Steven started his first Web page in 1996. Within a few years the site had grown to over a hundred pages following things such as his V8 Astro van project. "I had a Web site for several years and it really became a chore to keep updated. I wasn't going to pull the plug until the spam revolution started filling my sites email accounts with garbage." Steven told us, "For every legitimate email on my site, I would see fifty junk mails. And those were the ones that made it past my filters."

We asked Steven about his personal life and how it has been affected by the success of mentalsocket.com. He said he had recently married and "the site has only enhanced my marriage because my wife loves being married to such a popular guy. She's finishing her last year in the accounting program at FSU and has to constantly handle requests from her female classmates to get my number!" We don't know if it is that good for Steven but we do agree his site is first class material.

When he is not supporting local businesses with their computer needs, he can often be found at a local field flying radio control helicopters. The model helicopters zig zag around the sky, even going upside down and flying backwards at high speed. "I've been flying almost four years and I have only scratched the surface of what these helicopters can do."

Asked about other hobbies and interests, Steven listed more things than we have room to publish. "I like everything from drag racing to scuba diving. Full Scale Flying is an area I would like to pursue more when I have a slightly better budget than I do now. Lately we've been remodeling the house to the point that it almost qualifies as a hobby. It certainly uses some hobby money!"

He plans to keep mentalsocket.com up and running for the next few years. "In about three years we are planning to sell our current house. Finding or building a replacement house will likely affect this site but I will try my best to keep it running."

We had hoped to get more info from Steven but his phone rang. "Another client having problems with their computer due to spyware infestation. Something is going to have to change soon." About 30% of Steven's calls are directly related to spyware (software meant to spawn pop up ads or quietly take marketing information from a computer). "I make great money repairing systems damaged by this junk software, but it takes up my time and delays progress on bigger projects such as network installs. Thanks for talking with me, I've got to take care of this problem." And with that, Mr. Young drove off in his Honda Accord.
